MARIANNA E. STARK, Ph.D.
Patient Coordinator
CENTER FOR COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE PATIENT PROGRAM
The purpose of the patient program is to build a comprehensive database
from which to draw patients for future cognitive testing. The goal is to
better characterize brain-behavior relationships by studying patients with
relatively stable, focal lesions, either as a result of infarct or tumor
resection, as well as patients with other relatively restricted lesions
(e.g., split-brain patients). As the Patient Coordinator for the CCN, I
am responsible for administering a comprehensive neuropsychological battery
to each patient in order to assess a variety of cognitive capacities, including
language, memory, perception, problem solving, and attention. As well,
patients receive an MRI study in order to precisely measure and localize
the lesioned area. Recruitment of patients encompasses a number of hospitals
in the Philadelphia area, including the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania,
Temple University Hospital, and the Philadelphia Veterans Administration
Medical Center.
